We use MailMan software for lists which have total subscribership under 5000. We have found that the user and administration interface to be intuitive and very friendly. MailMan gives the administrator of the list a nice introduction page to describe the purpose of the list or a link to a website that co-exists for the subject of the list. MailMan also is able to send out confirmation messages to a subscriber; this alleviates spam messages and someone being subscribed without their knowledge.

For mailing lists that have a subscribership of over 5000 we use the eCartis software. This software is best used for newsletters, announce-only type lists and distribution lists. This software is more robust and handles huge lists very easily. The user interface is a little more difficult than with MailMan, but the advantages of using eCartis over MailMan for larger lists out weigh this deficit.
